Since time really consists of endlessly recurring cycles, this prime example of 20th-century technical progress simply cried out for a renaissance. It seemed only logical that this had to take place at Tutima itself and nowhere else, to ensure that the original in fact remained an original.
But now, decades after production of the original was discontinued, other factors hold sway, even in a field as conservative as that of watchmaking. New discoveries with regard to materials, advanced technologies and the increasingly stringent demands of potential buyers require consistent thinking ahead.
When planning the "Classic" project, it was clear from the very start that only a mechanical chronograph movement could be considered. However, that itself proved to be the greatest hurdle. The only traces that remained in Glashütte of the tools for the legendary UROFA 59 caliber were at best the former employees and the history books.
So once again, as in the days before UROFA was founded, help had to come from the watchmaking industry in Switzerland, in the form of chronograph specialist Valjoux. However, as far as the case, hands and dial were concerned, there was no need for such a "compromise", as meticulous attention to detail allowed these elements to be reproduced without any concessions whatsoever. On the contrary, the new stainless steel case with convex, scratch resistant sapphire crystal has many advantages over the original nickel-plated version. It is permanently water resistant to 10 bar and has a double-sealed crown. The imposing diameter of 38.7 mm corresponds exactly to its predecessor.
The time-keeping innards, however, had to be adapted to contemporary circumstances. The reliable and modern Valjoux 7760 caliber celebrated its premiere in 1985 as a hand-winding movement. The self-winding version is the "life force" in the great majority of today's mechanical chronographs. Tutima could thus rest assured that the criteria regarding reliability and precision were well satisfied. But this was not an end to the obstacles in Ganderkesee. The standard version of the Valjoux 7760 has a small but crucial difference, which Tutima simply could not ignore. The 30-minute timer is located at the "12". A complicated modification underneath the dial permitted the essential relocation of the minute counter to the "3". The Tutima version also boasts a fine finish, such as sophisticated Geneva stripes, surpassing the previous quality by far. First-rate components are used for the escapement system, achieving a standard of accuracy, which is sure to satisfy even the most demanding punctuality fanatic.
Together, all these factors put the Classic Tutima Chronograph in a category that is rarely encountered amongst the current plethora of replica watches.
